Under det tætte løv og glimtvise solskin i en regnskov i Rwanda trives en bjerggorillafamilie med samvær og leg. Sammen med dem er en kvinde, som efterligner deres bevægelser, foregiver at tygge blade og bliver accepteret af gruppens dominerende han. Den kvinde hedder Dian Fossey. Abeeksperten Fosseys bemærkelsesværdige pionerarbejde bliver skildret i denne film instrueret af Michael Apted, som hovedsagelig er indspillet i bjerggorillaernes eget miljø. Med en præstation, der indbragte hende en Golden Globe-pris for bedste skuespillerinde, skildrer Sigourney Weaver den karismatiske Fossey, som var drevet af en egenrådighed, der både var hendes styrke … og måske førte til det tragiske mord på hende.
