’War Machine’ er en sort, absurd satire om moderne krigsførelse, med Brad Pitt i hovedrollen som General Glen McMahon, en all-american cowboy-general, der sover fire timer hver nat, løber syv mil hver morgen og går under kælenavnet ’Glenimal’. Rollen er løst baseret på virkelighedens General Stanley McChrystal, der blev fyret fra posten som leder af den amerikanske militærindsats i Afghanistan, da han og hans stabsmedlemmer kom med stærkt kritiske kommentarer om Præsident Obama og hans administration. McMahon og hans stab introduceres som et rent ratpack eller en superheltegruppe, der nu skal rydde op i det rod, der hedder Afghanistan, og sparke noget røv (»USA! USA! USA!«). Det viser sig dog hurtigt, at de er de eneste, der er interesserede i at vinde en krig.
