"The Great Raid" er den hidtil ukendte beretning om en lille flok helt almindelige, ekstraordinært modige mænd og kvinder, der elskede, kæmpede og døde i frihedens navn. Episk og gribende som ’Pearl Harbor’, heroisk som ’Saving Private Ryan’ og realistisk som ’Kammerater i Krig’. 3 år i den japanske krigsfangelejrs helvede har kostet dyrt. De er nu kun 500 tilbage. Håbet og den smule mad og medicin civile modigt smugler ind, holder dem lige akkurat i live. Livlinen skyldes den altopofrende kærlighed mellem fangelederen Major Gibson og sygeplejersken Margaret, som arbejder for modstandsbevægelsen. Nu nærmer redningen sig - de amerikanske tropper stormer frem på Filippinerne. Men japanerne myrder alle fanger, når de trækker sig tilbage. I desperat forsøg på at redde de sidste fanger iværksætter 6th U.S. Ranger Battalion et overraskelsesangreb dybt inde bag fjendens linier. Skridt… for skridt… sniger soldater og partisaner sig gennem junglen – i stilheden før stormen.
